happiest of valenti*M*es to you and you and you.

So, I flipped a coin on whether to write about Friday the 13th or Valentines day. You can see from the picture above, which won.  Actually, as it goes, I’ll probably write a bit about both…

Setting up at work, a colleague and I were musing about the number of break-ups there would be today on Friday the 13th – the day before Valentines compared to the number there would be the day after.

I wondered aloud if anyone had done a study on that…2 minute searching at the desk yielded this article from a couple of years ago (http://nydn.us/172hAuF).  That article made me think of commitment in general – and then fear of commitment – and then I paused on the notion of fear – which in turn lead me right back to Friday the 13th and specifically fearing that day.  I didn’t realize there is a name for this, it is “friggatriskaidekaphobia” – I’m still trying to pronounce that in my head…and, of course this all made me think of a long while back when my then boyfriend decided that we’d host a Friday the 13th  double feature film night with some other couples – not the best idea because I don’t like horror films. Turned out that one of the couples (his best buddy) broke up that night and I was tasked with setting him up on a blind date a few weeks later with one of my girlfriends – you guessed it – on Valentines weekend.  The blind date morphed into a double date with us and the evening went awkwardly at best and, well – I think you know how this story ends…

Huh.  I guess I kind of answered my own question.
